8.4: The past

Almost every verb of chapters 3 and 5 is in the past. Kaccāyana has three sets of past endings: the ajjatanī (from ajja, “today”) {419}, the hiyyattanī (from hiyyo, “yesterday”) {418} and the parokkhā (the “unseen”, unwitnessed past) {417}; the texts use the first for any past event.

Ask three things of a past form: its ending, which gives the person and number as in 8.1; whether an a is put before the root, a-gamī {519}; and whether an s stands before the ending, aho-s-i {491}.

Kaccāyana’s active endings are ī uṁ, o ttha, iṁ mhā, in the table’s order {428}; on the page the ī is nearly always short {517}. -si is also the present “you” ending (gacchasi {423}), -iṁ, -uṁ also noun endings (aggiṁ, bhikkhuṁ). Appendix I tables the rules.

-iṁ first ⨀ paccaññāsiṁ, paṭilabhiṁ {428}
-imha, -imhā first ⨂ agacchimhā, “we went” (chapter 1) {428}, {516}

An a is “sometimes” put before the root in the three pasts, agamī {519}: avoca, ahosi, aññāsi have it, nisīdi, āmantesi, abhinanduṁ do not. After a prefix it sits between prefix and root: ud-a-pādi.

After mā (“do not”) a past form is a prohibition or a negative wish, not a past: evaṁ me rūpaṁ mā ahosi, “may my rūpa not be thus” (7: 2.2) {420}.
