Four Bases of Success (`cattāro iddhipādā`)
1341. “Bhikkhave, these cattāro iddhipādā (four bases of success), when cultivated and practised often, lead to going from the near shore to the far shore. What four? Here, Bhikkhave, a bhikkhu
- cultivates the basis of success that possesses
samādhi(focus) born ofchanda(desire), along with thepadhānasaṅkhāra(mental constructions of exertion);- cultivates the basis of success that possesses focus born of
vīriya(energy), along with the mental constructions of exertion;- cultivates the basis of success that possesses focus born of
citta(mind), along with the mental constructions of exertion;- cultivates the basis of success that possesses focus born of
vīmaṃsā(discrimination), along with the mental constructions of exertion.These four bases of success, Bhikkhave, when cultivated and practised often, lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.”
1341. “Cattārome, bhikkhave, iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṃ gamanāya saṃvattanti. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti, vīriyasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti, cittasamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti, vīmaṃsāsamādhippadhānasaṅkhārasamannāgataṃ iddhipādaṃ bhāveti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṃ gamanāya saṃvattantī”ti.
