Four Reflections (`cattāro satipaṭṭhānā`)
751. “Bhikkhave, this is the one and only way
- for the purification of beings,
- for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation,
- for the disappearance of pain and distress,
- for the attainment of the right method,
- for the realisation of Nibbāna
— namely,
cattāro satipaṭṭhānā(the four reflections). Which four? Here, bhikkhave:
- a bhikkhu
kāye kāyānupassī viharati(dwells contemplating the body [or, physical objects] in the body), ardent, clearly comprehending, and mindful, having overcome covetousness and aversion in the world;- he dwells contemplating
vedanā(feelings) in feelings … ;- he dwells contemplating
citta(the mind) in the mind … ;- he dwells contemplating
dhamma(perceptual objects) in dhamma … .This is the one and only way for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and distress, for the attainment of the right method, for the realization of Nibbāna — namely, the four reflections.”
