Five Precepts, or Training Rules (`pañcasikkhāpada`)

768. He was dwelling in Sāvatthī.

“By nature, bhikkhave, beings associate and come together.

Killers of living beings associate and come together with killers of living beings;

those who take what is not given associate and come together with those who take what is not given;

those who misconduct themselves in sensual pleasures associate and come together with those who misconduct themselves in sensual pleasures;

liars associate and come together with liars; and

those who indulge in intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness associate and come together with those who indulge in intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness.

769.

Those abstaining from killing living beings associate and come together with those abstaining from killing living beings;

those abstaining from taking what is not given associate and come together with those abstaining from taking what is not given;

those abstaining from sexual misconduct associate and come together with those abstaining from sexual misconduct;

those abstaining from false speech associate and come together with those abstaining from false speech; and

those abstaining from intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness associate and come together with those abstaining from intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness.”
