933. [The Bhagavฤ] was staying in Rฤjagaha, at the Bamboo Grove.
Then ฤyasmฤ Mahakassapa approached the Bhagavฤ. Having approached and saluted the Bhagavฤ, he sat down to one side. As ฤyasmฤ Mahakassapa sat to one side, the Bhagavฤ said this to him:
โKassapa, admonish the bhikkhus; Kassapa, give the bhikkhus a discourse on the Dhamma. Either I, Kassapa, would admonish the bhikkhus, or you would; either I would give the bhikkhus a discourse on the Dhamma, or you would.โ
934. โIndeed, Bhante, nowadays the bhikkhus are difficult to admonish, they are endowed with qualities that make them difficult to admonish, they are impatient, and they do not accept instruction respectfully. Here, Bhante, I saw a bhikkhu named Bhaแนแธa, a companion of ฤyasmฤ ฤnanda, and a bhikkhu named Abhijika, a companion of ฤyasmฤ Anuruddha, disputing with each other about what they had heard, saying:
โCome, bhikkhu, who will speak more, who will speak better, who will speak longer?โโ
935. Then the Bhagavฤ addressed a certain bhikkhu:
โCome, bhikkhu, in my name, summon the bhikkhu Bhaแนแธa, a companion of ฤyasmฤ ฤnanda, and the bhikkhu Abhijika, a companion of ฤyasmฤ Anuruddha, (saying): โThe Teacher summons the ฤyasmanto.โโ
โYes, Bhante,โ
that bhikkhu replied to the Bhagavฤ, and he went to those bhikkhus. Having approached, he said to those bhikkhus:
โThe Teacher summons the ฤyasmanto.โ
936. โYes, friend,โ
those bhikkhus replied to that bhikkhu, and they went to the Bhagavฤ. Having approached and saluted the Bhagavฤ, they sat down to one side. As those bhikkhus sat to one side, the Bhagavฤ said this to them:
โIs it true, bhikkhus, that you dispute with each other about what you have heard, saying:
โCome, bhikkhu, who will speak more, who will speak better, who will speak longer?โโ
โYes, Bhante.โ
โHave you bhikkhus understood the Dhamma taught by me in this way โ
โCome, bhikkhus, dispute with each other about what you have heard, saying: Come, bhikkhu, who will speak more, who will speak better, who will speak longer?โโ
โNo, Bhante.โ
โIf indeed you bhikkhus have not understood the Dhamma taught by me in this way, then for what reason, you foolish men, knowing what, seeing what, having gone forth into this well-proclaimed Dhamma and Discipline, do you dispute with each other about what you have heard, saying:
โCome, bhikkhu, who will speak more, who will speak better, who will speak longer?โโ
937. Then those bhikkhus fell with their heads at the Bhagavฤโs feet and said to the Bhagavฤ:
โBhante, an offense has overtaken us, as if we were foolish, deluded, and unskillful, we who, having gone forth into this well-proclaimed Dhamma and Discipline, disputed with each other about what we had heard, saying:
โCome, bhikkhu, who will speak more, who will speak better, who will speak longer.โ
Bhante, may the Bhagavฤ accept our offense as an offense for future restraint.โ
938. โIndeed, bhikkhus, an offense has overtaken you, as if you were foolish, deluded, and unskillful, you who, having gone forth into this well-proclaimed Dhamma and Discipline, disputed with each other about what you had heard, saying:
โCome, bhikkhu, who will speak more, who will speak better, who will speak longer.โ
But since you, bhikkhus, seeing the offense as an offense, rectify it in accordance with the Dhamma, we accept that from you. For this is growth in the Noble Discipline, bhikkhus: when one sees an offense as an offense, rectifies it in accordance with the Dhamma, and undertakes future restraint.โ
933. Rฤjagahe veแธทuvane. Atha kho ฤyasmฤ mahฤkassapo yena bhagavฤ tenupasaแน kami; upasaแน kamitvฤ bhagavantaแน abhivฤdetvฤ ekamantaแน nisฤซdi. Ekamantaแน nisinnaแน kho ฤyasmantaแน mahฤkassapaแน bhagavฤ etadavocaโ โovada, kassapa, bhikkhลซ; karohi, kassapa, bhikkhลซnaแน dhammiแน kathaแน. Ahaแน vฤ, kassapa, bhikkhลซ ovadeyyaแน tvaแน vฤ; ahaแน vฤ bhikkhลซnaแน dhammiแน kathaแน kareyyaแน tvaแน vฤโti.
934. โDubbacฤ kho, bhante, etarahi bhikkhลซ, dovacassakaraแนehi dhammehi samannฤgatฤ, akkhamฤ, appadakkhiแนaggฤhino anusฤsaniแน. Idhฤhaแน, bhante, addasaแน bhaแนแธaรฑca nฤma bhikkhuแน ฤnandassa saddhivihฤriแน abhijikaรฑca nฤma bhikkhuแน anuruddhassa saddhivihฤriแน aรฑรฑamaรฑรฑaแน sutena accฤvadanteโ โehi, bhikkhu, ko bahutaraแน bhฤsissati, ko sundarataraแน bhฤsissati, ko cirataraแน bhฤsissatฤซโโti.
935. Atha kho bhagavฤ aรฑรฑataraแน bhikkhuแน ฤmantesiโ โehi tvaแน, bhikkhu, mama vacanena bhaแนแธaรฑca bhikkhuแน ฤnandassa saddhivihฤriแน abhijikaรฑca bhikkhuแน anuruddhassa saddhivihฤriแน ฤmantehiโ โsatthฤ ฤyasmante ฤmantetฤซโโti. โEvaแน, bhanteโti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paแนญissutvฤ yena te bhikkhลซ tenupasaแน kami; upasaแน kamitvฤ te bhikkhลซ etadavocaโ โsatthฤ ฤyasmante ฤmantetฤซโti.
936. โEvamฤvusoโti kho te bhikkhลซ tassa bhikkhuno paแนญissutvฤ yena bhagavฤ tenupasaแน kamiแนsu; upasaแน kamitvฤ bhagavantaแน abhivฤdetvฤ ekamantaแน nisฤซdiแนsu. Ekamantaแน nisinne kho te bhikkhลซ bhagavฤ etadavocaโ โsaccaแน kira tumhe, bhikkhave, aรฑรฑamaรฑรฑaแน sutena accฤvadathaโ โehi, bhikkhu, ko bahutaraแน bhฤsissati, ko sundarataraแน bhฤsissati, ko cirataraแน bhฤsissatฤซโโti? โEvaแน, bhanteโ. โKiแน nu kho me tumhe, bhikkhave, evaแน dhammaแน desitaแน ฤjฤnฤthaโ โetha tumhe, bhikkhave, aรฑรฑamaรฑรฑaแน sutena accฤvadathaโ ehi, bhikkhu, ko bahutaraแน bhฤsissati, ko sundarataraแน bhฤsissati, ko cirataraแน bhฤsissatฤซโโti? โNo hetaแน, bhanteโ. โNo ce kira me tumhe, bhikkhave, evaแน dhammaแน desitaแน ฤjฤnฤtha, atha kiรฑcarahi tumhe, moghapurisฤ, kiแน jฤnantฤ kiแน passantฤ evaแน svฤkkhฤte dhammavinaye pabbajitฤ samฤnฤ aรฑรฑamaรฑรฑaแน sutena accฤvadathaโ โehi, bhikkhu, ko bahutaraแน bhฤsissati, ko sundarataraแน bhฤsissati, ko cirataraแน bhฤsissatฤซโโti.

Atha kho te bhikkhลซ bhagavato pฤdesu sirasฤ nipatitvฤ bhagavantaแน etadavocuแนโ โaccayo no, bhante, accagamฤ, yathฤbฤle yathฤmลซแธทhe yathฤakusale, ye mayaแน evaแน svฤkkhฤte dhammavinaye pabbajitฤ samฤnฤ aรฑรฑamaรฑรฑaแน sutena accฤvadimhaโ โehi, bhikkhu, ko bahutaraแน bhฤsissati, ko sundarataraแน bhฤsissati, ko cirataraแน bhฤsissatฤซโti. Tesaแน no, bhante, bhagavฤ accayaแน accayato paแนญiggaแนhฤtu ฤyatiแน saแนvarฤyฤโti.
938. โTaggha tumhe, bhikkhave, accayo accagamฤ yathฤbฤle yathฤmลซแธทhe yathฤakusale, ye tumhe evaแน svฤkkhฤte dhammavinaye pabbajitฤ samฤnฤ aรฑรฑamaรฑรฑaแน sutena accฤvaditthaโ โehi, bhikkhu, ko bahutaraแน bhฤsissati, ko sundarataraแน bhฤsissati, ko cirataraแน bhฤsissatฤซโti. Yato ca kho tumhe, bhikkhave, accayaแน accayato disvฤ yathฤdhammaแน paแนญikarotha, taแน vo mayaแน paแนญiggaแนhฤma. Vuddhi hesฤ, bhikkhave, ariyassa vinaye yo accayaแน accayato disvฤ yathฤdhammaแน paแนญikaroti ฤyatiรฑca saแนvaraแน ฤpajjatฤซโti.
