I am a lifelong learner. Here is a summary of my formal education and academic achievements.

Papers / Conferences

• Presented several times to the Tableau User Group in Sydney, and to R-Ladies Sydney. I have not been able to find copies of these presentations.
• Wrote Section 13.2 (Manage Portfolio, Program, and Project) of APQC’s Process Classification Framework, which APQC adopted in Version 7.0.0 (October 2015); Version 6.0.0 credits Transfield Services alongside Intel and IBM.
• Presented “Services Oriented Architecture: opportunities and challenges of embedding SOA in a Retail Bank” at Bank.Tech.06 (Sydney, 27–28 July 2006), while Head of Architecture, Technology Australia, Retail Banking at NAB, with the original deck.
• Presented “The Role of Service Oriented Architecture within an Enterprise Architecture” at The Enterprise Architecture Conference 2005 (Sydney, 8–10 August 2005), while Head of Architecture, Distribution at NAB, with the original deck.
• Presented “The promise and pitfalls of implementing a Services Oriented Architecture” to the Microsoft Architect Council (Sydney, 3 August 2005), with the original deck.
• Sat on the panel at an ACS NSW Branch Forum on SOA (June 2005), part of the society’s “Education Across the Nation” series. Kate Behan’s background presentation, which sourced its definition and rationale from my earlier SOA talk, is reproduced here with her original deck.
• Presented “The promise and pitfalls of implementing a Services Oriented Architecture” at Ark Group’s Planning and Implementing Service-Oriented Architecture conference (Sydney Marriott, 15–17 March 2005), while Head of Architecture, Distribution at NAB, with the organisers’ PDF and the delegate feedback report.
• Wrote four articles for APC magazine’s September 2004 issue, while Head of Architecture at MLC: a digital TV software roundup (also reproduced as APC’s edit of it), a myHTPC workshop and a remote controls tutorial.
• Presented “Selling web services to senior management” in July 2004, a case study of the architecture practice at MLC, while Head of Architecture there, with the original deck. The deck names no conference and nothing survives that records which one it was.
• Presented “Lessons Learnt from implementing and embedding an enterprise architecture team at National Wealth Management” at both BTELL Enterprise Architecture Conferences of 2003, in Sydney on 24 July and in Wellington over 4–6 November, while Manager, Architecture at National Wealth Management, with the original deck.
• Presented “Getting technology right for advisers” in September 2003, on behalf of Geoff Wenborn, then CIO of National Wealth Management — he could not attend and asked me to give it, and I had built the deck from his ideas. It names no conference; I believe it is the case study my 2005 résumé lists as “Case Study: National Wealth Management”, given to the Open Group’s Enterprise Architecture Special Interest Group in Sydney, but the deck itself does not say so. Reproduced from the deck as delivered, with the earlier 9 September state alongside it.
• Presented “Electronic Commerce and the Consumer” at the Finance Industry Reform conference (Sydney, 1997), while at Hewlett-Packard, on why consumers were hesitating over online shopping and what that meant for bank delivery channels. Reproduced from the original deck, with the shorter later cut alongside it.
• Presented “Distributed Client/Server Architectures: What Are The Options” at the Client/Server Strategies Seminar (Sydney, 1995), while at AT&T Global Information Solutions. I take it to be a third outing for the material behind the two 1994 papers below: the title keeps their opening words and swaps the rest for the name of the section that sets out the client/server models. Nothing confirms that, because no copy of the talk survives — both of the backup volumes holding my work from those years have now been searched in full, by filename, by content and by date, and it appears in nothing but my own CVs.
• Presented “Distributed Client/Server Architectures and Transaction Processing on Open Systems” at AUUG’94 and, in revised form, at Oracle OpenWorld ’94, while at AT&T Global Information Solutions, with the Word manuscripts for AUUG’94 and OpenWorld.
• Presented “Performance Tuning for Relational Database Applications” at AUUG’93, while at NCR Australia, with the Word manuscript.
• Co-authored technical paper “UNIX Password Encryption considered insecure” (USENIX Winter ’91 Conference, Dallas, pp. 269–279), with a scan of the proceedings.
• Developed a method for distributed/parallel computation of options risk management, co-authored as “Distributed Computing & Risk Management” (SunTech Journal, Sun Microsystems, Vol. 3 No. 1, Winter 1990), with a scan of the issue and the longer manuscript we submitted.
• Honours thesis on a computer language for representing and processing music, “Rubato: A Music Input and Performance System” (Basser Department of Computer Science, University of Sydney, 1987), for which I was awarded the University Medal in 1988.
