Writing on Life, the Universe and Everything.
Everything I have written since 1987, recovered from the formats I wrote it in and kept in one place, because most of the places that published it have closed.
Everything I have written since 1987 is here, in one format, in one repository.
Most of it was published somewhere that has since shut. MichaelDVD is gone. My own site at users.bigpond.net.au is gone. Audioholics is still running, and has lost twenty-three of the figures I gave it — I put those back from my own manuscripts.
The originals were on a backup volume, in the formats I wrote them in: Word 2.0, PowerPoint 4.0, troff, Dreamweaver templates, and a 1992 ARJ archive holding work from 1987. Modern PowerPoint will not open a PowerPoint 4.0 deck. It does not say so, either — it opens nothing and reports no error.
So I converted the lot to Markdown. A hundred and forty-eight articles, 410,788 words, 432 figures, the oldest redrawn as vector from the metafiles Word cached for each embedded object.
Thirty-nine of the original documents sit beside the articles, so anyone can check a reproduction against the thing it was made from. Each article says where it came from and what was repaired on the way.
The first groups below say where a piece was published and the rest say what it is about, so most sit in two. The cloud underneath is the vocabulary across the lot.
I did not do this to be read.
The sites are closing and the software is dying, and the only copy that survives is the one somebody bothered to keep.
Conference papers16
Papers and talks given at conferences and seminars, reproduced from the decks and manuscripts they were delivered from.
Published articles114
Writing that appeared in a magazine or on another site, republished here with a link to where it ran.
Written for this site15
Pieces written here rather than reproduced from anywhere, some of them filed under the date of the work they describe.
Academic work4
Assignments written for assessment rather than for readers, reproduced from the manuscripts they were submitted as.
Audio and video34
Home theatre, digital audio, and the measurements behind the arguments about them.
DVD reviews49
Discs reviewed for MichaelDVD between 2000 and 2001, judged on the transfer rather than the film.
Hardware reviews12
Players, amplifiers and one home theatre PC, measured as well as listened to.
SA-CD31
Super Audio CD releases reviewed for SA-CD.net between 2003 and 2009, on the performance and the disc in equal measure.
Finance4
Markets, instruments and the institutions that trade them — including one bank I was working inside when it failed.
Software15
Programs I have written, and a few I have taken apart.
Career13
Architecture practice, technology strategy, and what four decades of doing it taught me.
Computing history7
Old machines, old formats, and how much of it still runs.
