Head of Strategy and Architecture

MLC

  • Established the architecture function at MLC, re-establishing strategic control over technology from a fully outsourced IT operation managed by IBM GSA.
  • Managed a team of enterprise and solution architects; represented MLC on the National Architecture Council, and represented the architecture team at the MLC Strategic Architecture Forum.
  • Custodian of the enterprise architecture and technology standards at MLC level, and responsible for architecture governance.
  • Led the definition of MLC’s IT Strategy in 1999, and the application architecture stream of the 2001 BT Strategy.
  • Part of the team defining MLC’s Enterprise Medium Term Vision, the Accelerated Strategic Advice Platform, and the business case for the $200m Amazon Programme initiated in 2001–2002.

Architecture governance

  • Established architecture governance processes now used throughout NAB. Key elements were adopted across the National Group, at the Architecture Council and by other architecture teams.
  • Established the solution architecture role at MLC, later introduced as a standard role within NAB, with its governance process embedded in PGCI — “Projects in the National”.
  • Provided advice and mentoring for the establishment of architecture teams in Enterprise Technology, BNZ and FSET, and mentored architects elsewhere in the National Group and in other organisations.
  • Established a skills matrix for the team, used in development planning, alongside coaching and succession planning for team members.

Programmes

  • Championed a “veneer” approach to the adviser workbench, which led to the SHAPE project within Amazon and a subsequent patent application for the design — a first for the National Group.
  • Introduced the Smart Client approach for AdviserCentral, built on Microsoft .NET and web services for horizontal and vertical integration.
  • Introduced a composite application, web services and business process orchestration approach for the Strategic Desktop, using the Siebel portal, IBM HATS and TIBCO.
  • Architecture representative on the BT team for Integra, the MLC and NAFM integration.
  • Presented Getting technology right for advisers in September 2003 on behalf of the CIO of National Wealth Management, on the shift to holistic advice and the platform behind it.
  • Developed the business case for replacing the unit pricing system (Unison/Zenith), and participated in the programme review of the AdvisorCo/360 adviser workbench initiative, at CEO level in conjunction with the CIO.

  • Applications: AdviserCentral, Compass, Masterkey, Siebel.
  • Application development and integration: Microsoft .NET, J2EE, Rational, IBM MQ, Tuxedo, TIBCO.
  • Data: the Amazon logical data model, and IBM BDW.
  • Strategic infrastructure: EMC SAN for consolidated data storage and imaging cache, and Sun and IBM Unix servers.
