Architecture Consultant

• Joined in October 1995 as a Senior Consultant in the Professional Services Organisation, providing strategic technology planning and IT architecture consulting to HP’s customers as part of the Software, Architecture & Methods practice.
• Solution and lead architect for major implementation projects and tender responses, and pre-sales and post-sales consulting on HP products and technologies.
• Team leader for the IT strategy and architecture practice in FY95, responsible for the practice plan including the Hoshin and implementation plans, and for coordinating team meetings.
• Ran the internal mailing list on IT architecture for HP consultants engaged in architecture work.
• Spoke on electronic commerce and the consumer at the Finance Industry Reform conference in Sydney in 1997.

• IT strategy — helping customers define a strategy for their IT infrastructure from an understanding of their business objectives.
• IT assessment — establishing at a high level how well a customer’s current infrastructure supports those objectives, and recommending improvements.
• Enterprise IT architecture — the enterprise-wide architectural components needed to support the strategy.
• IT architecture review — reviewing an existing architecture and its readiness to adopt emerging technologies, verifying that selected technologies meet architectural guidelines.
• Transition services — a plan for moving smoothly to the new environment.

Boral

• Seconded for seven months as infrastructure architect, reporting to the Group Technology manager of a group with three major business divisions, each with its own IT.
• Defined the Unix server infrastructure strategy, and proposed and initiated a $2m server upgrade project.
• Developed the business case for consolidating the existing data centres into a common facility, and helped establish service level agreements between centralised Group Technology and the divisions.
• Despite initial reservations from each business unit, the consolidated server and data centre strategy was adopted, for significant operational savings.

Other engagements

• Chief architect of a joint project between HP, Telstra and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, to develop an interactive online environment for school children built around multimedia content creation and collaboration.
• Conducted several architecture reviews for a major telecommunications company, across various systems and business units including mobile ratings and satellite services.
• Architecture review of an imaging and workflow claims processing project at an insurance company.
• Extended a major insurance company’s existing IT strategy by developing an enterprise-wide applications architecture.
• Lead architect through the initiation phase of an enterprise-wide client/server architecture at a major bank, covering scoping, readiness assessment, business alignment and IT assessment.
• Acted as lead architect for several tender responses.
