Bain & Company

  • Employed from July 1986 as a part time UNIX system administrator and systems programmer for the Fixed Interest Division, administering an HP 9000 Series 320 running HP-UX — one of the first commercial UNIX systems in Australia — and writing systems software in C and the Bourne and C shells.
  • Secured a licence for ACSnet, the store-and-forward network that preceded the Internet in Australia, and established the link between Bain & Company and the University of Sydney in 1986, giving the firm its own domain name, email and USENET access and making it one of the earliest Australian non-academic sites online.

Software

  • Designed and implemented a device independent screen manipulation and forms handling library.
  • Designed a generic bond pricing library.
  • Ported the money market pricing tools and other applications from UNIX to MS-DOS.
